The Glory and the Shame

Yesterday evening, Sassy and I were working on her homework.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Hmmm”

“Have you ever heard of an éclair?”

Have I ever heard of an éclair? Seriously?  I’ve been to 12 step programs over eclairs.

“Yes, I’ve heard of eclairs.  Why?”

“They’re really good,” Sassy tells me in all seriousness.  Her face was solemn, as if she was imparting something as serious and life altering as the Rosetta Stone.

“Yes, they are,” I agree.  “Where did you eat one?”

“Clarissa had one in her lunch.  She shared some with me.”

Clarissa is obviously a nice girl.  I knew she wouldn’t have tasted such a thing at home.  There is no way I’d be sharing something like an éclair.  I buy those when I’m alone and eat them in the car in shame and by myself, as it should be.

E’CLAIRS, OMG. I buy three to take home, but I always eat one before I ever get home in the car. I only buy them from one bakery in Tucson. I have been know to buy 5 because then there are two for my spouse, and three for me. One is still in secret before I get home. Cake has that same fate if it is really good Cake. Just slices, not whole cakes. So now my granddaughter is a conissoire as well. Well that is three generations of E’CLAIR fanatics !!

They have the best e’clairs ever at a small bakery in Astoria, OR. I miss them soooooooo much. With all due respect to the aforementioned bakery in Tucson, no others compare. Even our brothers agree. Whenever they came to visit, they would want one. Next to the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River, it is the e’clairs at the tiny Swedish Home Bakery that I miss the most about Astoria.
